Dr. Robert Mitchell, a Richmond native, received a B.S. in Biology from Tulane University in 1978 and an M.D. from Medical College of Virginia in 1982. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham, and finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Duke University Medical Center in 1988. He began practice in Richmond that same year. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
Dr. Mitchell served as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Hunter Holmes McGuire V.A. Hospital from 1989 to 2001. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, Medical Society of Virginia, Richmond Academy of Medicine, and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. His practice interests are general gastroenterology and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
In his free time, he enjoys being with his wife and their three children, reading, following sports, movies, and playing golf.
Dr. Richard Mitchell has practiced gastroenterology in Richmond since 1994.
He received a B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia and his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his GI fellowship at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Following his fellowship he was a faculty member at Wake Forest for three years.
Richard is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Medical Society of Virginia, and Richmond Academy of Medicine. He specializes in general gastroenterology, colon cancer screening, as well as endoscopic therapy.
Richard enjoys spending time with his wife and children, reading, golfing and saltwater fishing.
Dr. Harjit Bhogal received her B.S. from the University of Waterloo in Ontario and her medical degree from King’s College London School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.
Dr. Bhogal obtained a fellowship in Hospital Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at VCU Medical Center. After working in private practice in Maryland, she has joined the Mitchell Endoscopy Center.
In addition to general gastroenterology and liver diseases, Dr. Bhogal specializes in women’s gastrointestinal health and colon cancer screening.
Dr. George Henry completed both his B.S. in Biology and his medical degree at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Henry then completed his residency in Internal Medicine as well as Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterologists, American Gastroenterology Association, and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His practice interests are inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer screening, GERD, and dysphagia.
Dr. Henry’s hobbies include reading, hiking, and following Ole Miss football. He enjoys traveling and exploring the Richmond food scene. He is married to Erin Blair Henry, formerly of Ashland.
Dr. George Smallfield received his B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia and M.D. from Eastern Virginia Medical School where he graduated AOA. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he was the chief fellow. During his training he received a MSPH from the University of Alabama at Birmingham for heath care policy and organization.
Following training, he was faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for 3 years and at Virginia Commonwealth University for 10 years focused on esophageal diseases and training new gastroenterologists. Currently, he is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology where he serves as an associate editor of the American Journal of Gastroenterology’s Red Section. He enjoys helping patients with swallowing problems and precancerous esophageal lesions as well as colon cancer screening. He treats a variety of gastrointestinal illnesses and hopes to improve the quality of life for his patients.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, skiing during the winter and boating in the summer.
